Featured Evergreen Insider: Ginny Kelly, Owner & Race Director of Bad Beard Events

It’s with excitement that we introduce our Evergreen Insiders to Ginny Kelly, Owner and Race Director of Bad Beard Events, formerly the Rock/Creek Race Series. Ginny, an RRCA certified running coach, shares Jeremy’s passion for the outdoor community and trail running. Together, they’re excited to host the Holiday Hustle at Black Creek trail race on December 22, 2024—an event you won’t want to miss!

Let’s dive into the conversation with Ginny Kelly to learn more about her journey, the evolution of Bad Beard Events, and what makes Chattanooga’s running scene so special.

Q: What was it about this industry that made you want to be a part of it enough to start a business?
A: Trail running introduced me to some of my closest friends, pushed me to places I never thought I could physically go, and allowed me to explore places off the beaten path. I saw that people loved exploring as much as I did, so when I was asked to be the RD (Race Director) for Rock/Creek races, I gladly accepted, even though I had no experience. Two years later, I bought the series with my friend, Chad Wykle, and renamed it Bad Beard Events.

Q: Does your business have a stated mission statement, the reason for its existence?
A: Improving access to the outdoors.

Q: What makes your business unique and how does it contribute to the vibrant culture of Chattanooga?
A: It allows people to feel comfortable exploring trails. We have so many gorgeous trails all over Chattanooga, and oftentimes, people don't know where to start. My races give them a starting point, an ending point, and a great time with friends and volunteers in between.

Q: Has there been a particular relationship with someone without which you would most likely not have experienced the success you have?
A: A few people. Chad Wykle, a former owner of Rock/Creek, gave me the opportunity to direct seven years ago and taught me everything I know about directing. Dreama Campbell introduced me to most trails around the Chattanooga area, and Randy Whorton with Wild Trails was the leader of all of our trail runs when I moved to Chattanooga. These three people got me involved in the trail running world.

Q: What has been the biggest evolution that you and/or the business have experienced since starting out?
A: We rebranded a few years ago from Rock/Creek races to Bad Beard Events, which took a bit of time for runners to get used to. It was under the Rock/Creek brand for almost 20 years. Now, it's a female-run race company with one employee, and that's me, haha! It takes a lot more volunteer and sponsor help to make the races successful, and I am grateful for everyone who steps up to help!

Q: Can you share a significant challenge your business has faced, or is facing, and how you've overcome it or plan to overcome it, especially considering Chattanooga's evolving landscape?
A: So many new races are popping up, and it's time I start thinking about how to differentiate Bad Beard Races from other races. Whether it's the course, the swag, the food, or the volunteers, I want runners to walk away feeling amazing and ready to sign up for all of my races the following year! I am looking forward to mixing things up in 2024.

Q: What exciting plans or developments can Chattanooga residents look forward to from your business in the near future?
A: I'll be adding some new races, group runs, trail maintenance volunteer days, and more in 2024, and I cannot wait!
